Solving Tricky Passages Before the Student Stumbles

Solving Tricky Passages Before the Student Stumbles

MTA(NSW) members are invited to a free online workshop with Anthony van den Broek

Date: Friday 6 November
Time: 1pm (Sydney time, AEDT)
Where: Online, via Zoom
Length: 45 minutes
Cost: Free

As teachers, we know those spots in a piece where our students are likely to have difficulty: a challenging leap - perhaps two at the same time, a texture that needs balancing, a passage where the hands won’t coordinate, a run that the students just can’t get even or coordinated. These passages are often predictable and we hear students glitch in these places frequently!

All of these passages are solvable, and most of the trouble can be avoided with strategic preparation.

In this workshop Anthony will work through a selection of passages from his own teaching and from those teachers have sent in. For each one he’ll show why it goes wrong, how to fix it, and what could be taught beforehand so the student never stumbles in the first place.

The workshop is interactive, and members are invited to nominate a passage from their own teaching or playing when they register. Anthony will solve as many as time allows and teachers are encouraged to sit at the piano and try out the solutions for themselves during the webinar.

Can’t attend live? Register anyway and the recording will be sent to you. Registrations are essential.

The workshop is presented by the Institute of Music Pedagogy Australia, which is in strategic partnership with MTA(NSW) to deliver pedagogy training for members who wish to upgrade their membership and become accredited teachers.
