The 2026 Junior Music Festival Burwood will be held over two consecutive Sundays - Sunday 6 & 13 September, at the Fitzroy Hall, Fitzroy Hall and Woodstock Community Centre & Park, 22 Church Street, Burwood.

Junior Music Festivals offer young music students the opportunity to perform in a friendly, relaxed and encouraging environment. They are held in various locations throughout Sydney and also Newcastle and Wollongong. They are open to students of both members and non-members of the MTA.

Instead of being divided into age groups, Junior Music Festivals are divided into sections by the grade/ability of the performer. This means that all participants have a chance to shine and even win prizes, even late beginners. Any recognised Exam board grading system is acceptable.

Trophy prizes are awarded in all sections, with all participants receiving a Certificate of Participation and a report from the adjudicator.  Entrants must be aged 18 years and under as at 31 July. MIRIAM HYDE AWARD - The Miriam Hyde Piano Award has been rescheduled to Sunday 13 September at the Junior Music Festival Burwood. The competitor must play a piece composed by Miriam Hyde and the time limit will be 5 minutes. This award is open to piano students only, beginners to 8th Grade, duets not permitted. A $150.00 cash prize and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to the winner. This section will be offered on the condition that 3 or more competitors have entered.

ADJUDICATOR - ANTHONY VAN DEN BROEK

BMus, LRSM, LMusA, DipABRSM, AMusA (Piano), AMusA (Harmony and Counterpoint)

Anthony van den Broek is a passionate pianist and teacher. He learnt the piano and organ from the age of 5 and majored in piano and harpsichord performance at UNSW. Anthony's musicological research focussed on historical performance practices of the baroque, classical and romantic repertoire, analysis and interpretation, as well as the keyboard and organ works of Bach and Messiaen.

Anthony is an examiner with the AMEB and has taught piano, theory and pedagogy to students of all ages and levels for the past 25 years. He is a Certified Instructor of the Taubman Approach for Piano (Golandsky Institute, USA), a groundbreaking approach that helps pianists overcome technical limitations as well as cure playing-related injuries. He spends considerable time teaching, mentoring and preparing current and future piano teachers for success in Teaching Diplomas, has lectured at Australian and international universities, and adjudicated piano competitions in the UK, USA and Australia.
